A Guide To Cafetieres

Whatever you call it, it’s one of the simplest ways to get your caffeine kick every morning, and the ideal desk companion to keep you topped up throughout the day. They’re hassle-free and inexpensive, and the easiest way to make enough cups to share. Here’s our guide on how to get the most out of your cafetiere.

Firstly…

Pre-heat your cafetiere and check the mesh for any old coffee grounds that can get caught after a brew. We recommend buying a cafetiere that can be taken apart for a proper wash to keep your coffee tasting as fresh as possible every time.

And speaking of fresh! It’s also best to begin with freshly ground coffee as well; keeping a grinder at home means that you can extract the most flavour out of your coffee beans with every cup. We recommend a medium-coarse grind, but this can also be dependent on the size of the mesh in your device; you can experiment with grind levels to see what gives you the most prominent flavour.

Grind between 12-15g of coffee for every cup you want to make. Use scales for accuracy if you can.

Next up…

Fill your cafetiere with water that’s just off the boil (about 92-96 degrees is ideal) by pouring in circular motions - this makes sure that you get all of your coffee grounds wet. Add around 250ml of water for every cup.

Put your lid back on WITHOUT pushing the plunger down to stop too much heat escaping.Leave it be for around 3-4 minutes whilst that water gets infused with some tasty caffeinated goodness, and then give it a quick 10-second stir before popping your lid back on.

This time, push down on the plunger at a consistent, relatively slow pace.

You’ll get the best flavour from your cup if you decant your coffee as soon as it has finished brewing - otherwise those grounds will carry on infusing your coffee.
